Dear University of Delaware Alumni, Friends and Community Allies:

The Latino community at the University of Delaware has made significant gains in the last three years.  The largest and most respected University in the State of Delaware now benefits from a highly influential Latino Student Union, known as The Campus Alliance de La Raza (CALR).  Incoming classes have featured relatively high percentages of students coming from the Latino community.  Additionally, UD alumni have recently established the La Raza Alumni Association (LRAA), a formal satellite entity of the UD Alumni Association that represents all La Raza and Latino alumni.

The voice of our community has never been stronger!  Our collective accomplishments are consistently recognized by the university administration, civil rights organizations, regional non-profits, local, national and international media, scholars, activists, and members of the community.  This has all been possible because of the support of community allies like you.

Now is the time to take our accomplishments to the next level, ensuring the sustainability of our movement.

As a shareholder in the success of under-represented students, we invite you to join us in raising money for the establishment of an endowment which will construct and support The La Raza Center for Latino and Minority Affairs (La Raza Center) at the University of Delaware.

As a community ally, you can assist us in a variety of capacities, including but not limited to:

  1. Using your influence throughout the region to spread the word of this worthy initiative;
  2. Becoming an annual donor yourself;
  3. Encouraging others who seek charitable causes and tax benefits to consider the La Raza Center Endowment at the University of Delaware.

LA RAZA CENTER: MISSION & FOCI

The La Raza Center will have a mission dedicated to the promotion of Latino studies and advocacy in pursuit of the Latino Agenda.   The Center will benefit the University of Delaware and State of Delaware in a variety of capacities, focusing on three key areas: Student Success, Public Policy Analysis, and Advocacy.

The Center’s staff will provide oversight and expertise to La Raza undergraduate Executive Boards, ensuring the continued success of programmatic goals and advocacy initiatives.  They will foster the social and intellectual development of La Raza members, promoting graduate and professional school while providing requisite guidance and preparation.  The La Raza Center's library will house a vast collection of literature on Latino and Ethnic studies.  Staff will work diligently with UD faculty and administration to bring the brightest minds to UD’s Ethnic Studies departments.  The Center will host annual lectures featuring prominent national and international figures, adding to a list that already includes individuals such as Piri Thomas, Dolores Huerta, Felipe Luciano, Bobby Seale, and the Venezuelan Ambassador to the United States.   The Center’s staff will work to integrate students into the initiatives of regional leaders in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors, cementing the partnership between the University of Delaware and pillars of the Latino community.  Finally, the Center will place an emphasis on coalition building with various other groups, especially progressive entities across the region.

OUR RECORD

Join us during this unprecedented time in the history of the University of Delaware and the State of Delaware.  Help us hold the door of opportunity open for as many under-represented and often disadvantaged students as possible.  Our record speaks for itself:  95% of our members graduate with their bachelors degrees.  80% of our graduates are pursuing or hold advanced degrees.  With only 11% of Latinos earning a 4 year degree, and 77% of those Latinos who enter college never graduating, the time to act is now.

DONOR DETAILS

We need $50,000 before we establish the La Raza Center Endowment.  Help us reach our first milestone by making your contribution today!

Thank you so much in advance for your continued support.
